Adaptation Futures is the Flagship biennial event of the UN World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP). Hosted by WASP & University of Canterbury NZ and sponsoring partners, AF2025 was held on October 13-16 2025 when over 1,500 members of the climate change adaptation community from around the world gathered in Ōtautahi/Christchurch New Zealand and online/hybrid format to share their knowledge on the challenges and opportunities of adaptation during the 8th edition of the Adaptation Futures international conference. With 3 plenaries and 13 parallel hybrid sessions, AF2025 focused particularly on Oceania and learning from Indigenous community leadership on accelerating adaptation. Other pressing themes include adaptation in cities, the water-energy-food nexus, NBS, finance loss and damages, equity and justice.

The event was a successful showcase of the RISE-IN project: The CEO of Christchurch NZ highlighted RISE-IN in her opening remarks to the full conference of approximately 1,500 attendees on the first day.

RISE-IN consortium member David Little delivered his presentation titled ‘Retreat isn’t the End - It’s the Start of Smarter Land use. Lessons from the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor’, featuring the RISE-IN project’s goals. Furthermore, he then led a full day field trip in the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor with around 30 international delegates.
