On 10 September, the Parish Council of Estela hosted the workshop “Climate-Resilient Solutions for Rio Alto”, organised as part of the European project RISE-IN – Resilient Investment for Sustainable Environments. Jointly organised by the Climate Center, the Municipality of Póvoa de Varzim and BIOPOLIS/CIBIO, the workshop brought together different organisations and local stakeholders to reflect on the challenges posed by climate change and explore potential responses for the Rio Alto river basin.
The session combined technical and territorial perspectives with a participatory working session. Discussions addressed the climate scenario and the impacts of climate change, the characteristics of the Rio Alto river basin, and the concept of Climate-Resilient Solutions.
During the participatory part of the workshop, participants worked together to discuss potential solutions, identify associated co-benefits and contribute to defining the next steps. This collaborative approach provided an opportunity to bring together different sectors, perspectives and areas of expertise.
The involvement of a diverse range of stakeholders is a central part of the RISE-IN approach. By bringing scientific knowledge together with local experience and capacity for action, the process aims to develop solutions that respond to the specific characteristics and needs of the territory.
Póvoa de Varzim is one of the demonstration areas of the RISE-IN project, where approaches to reducing flood and inundation risks will be developed and tested.
